Alexander Technique Group Class – Free For DGS Students!

FREE for DGS Students // $15 Non Students

Four Sundays beginning April 15th from 11:30am -12:30pm

Everyone knows that posture is important for tango, but standing straight can feel stiff and hinder balance. Taught to dancers at Juilliard, the Alexander Technique offers a feeling of lightness and ease, with the addition of grounded power. This is not a movement or stretch class, but wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to spend part of the class lying down.

Bring a yoga mat if you have one, and your dance shoes/heels, if you want.

Leland Vall has been certified to teach the Alexander Technique since 1996 and has a private practice in Manhattan and Great Neck. He is the author of The Secret to Using Your Body and has also taught Alexander at Chelsea Piers Sports Center, American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and the School for Film and Television. More information available at www.freeyourneck.com.

Ballet For Children – Every Saturday at 12:00pm – 12:45pm

Little ones will learn warm up routines and the basics of ballet in an imaginative and supportive environment. Exercises condition every body part in fun ways as different activities emphasize rhythm, tempo, direction, and balance. Students gain confidence as they master class skills and express their own creative ideas. They will build strong muscles and spatial awareness as their artistic side is nourished through a variety movements and music styles. This class will develop a foundation for further dance training while the individual person and love of dance are embraced.

The Instructor Lisa Johnson, a native Minnesotan, received her BFA in Dance from the University of Minnesota and attended Penn State for her Masters in Art Education. She has danced professionally for several choreographers in Minneapolis, Pennsylvania, and New York and was a member of the Sherry Greenspan Ensemble and The Pennsylvania Dance Theatre. Queer Tango is about breaking boundaries.

Boundaries of sexuality; of gender; of heteronormative roles. It’s a way for Argentine Tango to embrace members of the LGBT community, and it also offers opportunities for all dancers to strengthen their skills by studying both roles.

Leader/follower role reversal can help us to grow as dancers. It can help us to better understand our partners’ needs, learn to listen better, communicate with more strength, and be more empathetic to the unique challenges faced in the other role by putting ourselves in our partners’ shoes.

We’re pretty excited about this one…

Here at DGS headquarters, we’re all a flutter over this news.

That’s right, its Dardo.  And ballet.  Together again, for you, dear students.  We are very happy to announce the addition of open ballet classes for adults, taught by our very own magistral Dardo Galletto.  This class is designed for everyone – dancers and non-dancers alike – with an aim to help students develop core strength in a warm and nurturing environment.  The curriculum emphasizes posture, kinesiology and biomechanics of movement, as well as alignment, timing, and concentration.

This class is absolutely appropriate for all levels – this is an environment of non-intimidation and non-judgment.

Beginning Saturday, October 8th and every Saturday thereafter – 1:00-2:30pm.

$20/class  or $15/DGS Students.

“Ballet is a dance executed by the human soul.” – Alexander Pushkin
